The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), the first, foremost and largest multidisciplinary professional institute in Nigeria, was established in 1961 and attained charter status through Act 14 of June 19, 2003 which empowers it to control and regulate the practice of the management profession in all its ramifications in Nigeria.
The Institute depends on the quality and quantity of its membership who are various managerial and executive positions in both public and private sectors of the economy. Membership is strictly by passing the Management Professional Examination (MPE), studentsโ scheme or the NIM-NYSC examination of the Institute. However, special consideration is given to those who are already in top management positions in their work career. In such cases, the applicants are required to either to write and submit a well researched publishable Management Research Paper or go through the Intensive Training for Management Admission (ITMA) programme.
The professional membership categories of the Institute and their appellations are Associate (AMNIM); Member (MNIM); and Fellow (FNIM) and Companion (CNIM). Companion (CNIM) is an exclusive reserve for past Presidents of the Institute. There is also the Graduate membership category, which is not a professional membership category, meant for fresh graduates from where they upgrade to Associate membership after three years. With over 200,000 individual and 400 corporate organisations passing through the membership process of the Institute, NIM is the largest professional body in Africa.
Since the core mandate and Key Business Indicator (KBI) of the Institute is capacity building especially in the areas of management and leadership, the Institute has been in the forefront of human capital development in the critical sectors of the nationโs economy. The Institute has been collaborating with different private and public organisations in Nigeria, as well as some business schools of Ivy League universities and institutes in Europe, Asia, America, Africa and the US to contribute to nation building and body of knowledge through its numerous capacity building, consultancy, reengineering and human capital development programmes over the years. These verifiable qualitative collaborative ventures have, in no small measure, advanced the frontiers of professional education and certification both within and outside Nigeria. Some of the business schools of the universities involved in these partnerships include Harvard and Georgetown Universities in the United States; SouthBank, Cambridge and Manchester Universities in the United Kingdom; Queenโs University, Canada; American University of Sharjah, Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Kenya Institute of Management and Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa among others.
The Institute equally has management training partnerships with government ministries, department and agencies (MDAs) and corporate bodies across all sectors delivering well thought out customised training and human capital development programmes.
There is also the Mandatory Continuing Professional Education Programme (MCPEP) for membership progression. Apart from using it for the purposes of climbing up the membership ladder, MCPEP is also a means through which the Institute keeps its members updated with the latest development in the management profession to make them continually relevant in line with international best practices. This is in addition to other human capital development membership upgrade programmes the Institute holds for its members regularly such as the Continuing Learning and Development (CLAD) programme.
Since 2005, the Institute has been involved in building the capacity of the nationโs youths through the NIM-NYSC Strategic Partnership which focuses on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship. Over 2,000,000 youths have benefited from this 6-months tuition free programme which seeks to make the nationโs graduates not only employable but self-reliant through its entrepreneurship focus.
The Institute has also been catching the studentsโ population young and bringing them into the management profession through its studentsโ scheme programme. This programme which was specially designed for undergraduates of Polytechnics and Universities is open to those in their third and final years, their course of study notwithstanding. It is instructive to note that the studentsโ scheme programme has been mounted and is ongoing in most polytechnics and universities across the country. In addition to its exploits in human capital development and capacity building, the Institute usually holds an annual competition for youths known as Young Managersโ Competition (YMC) as part of its contributions to youth development and empowerment. The competition which is open to youths between the ages of 25 and 40 years was established in 1974 for the purpose of encouraging practicing young graduate managers who are endowed with creative and research ability to hone their skills in management related research. Over the years, Young Managersโ Competition has created a corps of young men and women who have distinguished themselves in conducting studies in different areas of human endeavours which has contributed to development in all its ramifications. The participation and content quality of the competition is not in doubt as some past winners of the competition have gone on to head some of the nationโs frontline organizations.
The Institute also holds an Annual National Management Conference (AMNC) which is its Flagship Thought Leadership event and the gathering of the highest number of management professionals under one roof that attracts nationwide public and private sector attention. The conference attracts about 3,000 participants who are decision makers and executives from various sectors of the economy and its outcome has always been presented to governments at all levels as part of the Instituteโs contribution towards economic and public policy formulation.
It is also worthy to mention that the Institute contributes to and supports professionalism amongst women through a yearly programme exclusively designed for women folk known as Women in Management and Leadership (WIMLEAD) Conference. It is an avenue for women professionals to come together and discuss issues that directly affect them at the home front, workplace and in the economy. Other regular programmes held by the Institute include its Public Policy Advocacy sessions; Management Day Lecture, the Distinguished Management Lecture among others. Burning and contemporary issues of national importance are usually spotlighted at such forums with the sole aim of supporting the policy formulation of government while involving the cream of decision makers who will assist in the policy implementation at their various organisations and endeavours.
With all these verifiable giant strides NIM has made both locally and internationally, it has been living up to its vision which is โTo be the Source and Symbol of Management Excellenceโ.
COUNCIL/MANAGEMENT
The affairs of the Institute are vested in the Council which is headed by a President and Chairman of Council who serves a maximum of two years in office. The Council is the policy making body of the Institute while the management team headed by a Registrar/Chief Executive is the implementation arm. The present Council is headed by Dr. (Mrs.) Christiana Atako, FNIM,and has Mrs. Taiwo Ganiyat Olusesi, MNIM, as the Registrar/Chief Executive and Secretary to Council.

The past Presidents serve as the moral compass of the Institute. Though retired, they still monitor activities at the Institute to ensure that the time-honoured vision, values and professional ethics and standards for which the Institute is known for over the years are maintained in all its dealings. OPERATIONAL SPREAD
The head office of the Institute is located at Management House, Plot 22, Idowu Taylor, Victorial Island, Lagos while it has Management Centres located in Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt. The Institute operates 37 branches with a branch in each of the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory. It has 116 chapters spread all over Nigeria (and still growing) for continuous networking and discussion amongst members. The branches and chapters are operating under a zonal structure in the six geo-political zones of the country, thereby giving the Institute a national spread that makes its presence and impact felt all over Nigeria.
